Post-Mortem Political Potshots

October 31st, 2007 by Bob

Most people decompose when they are dead and buried.  Amazingly, the late President Gerald Ford is composing!  Apparently, President Ford was not very Presidential in private and was happy to take potshots at anyone and everyone.  President Ford did this in private, but within eat shot of Thomas DeFrank who published these quips in his book “Write It When I’m Gone.”  For the whole story, go to Reuters.

You might remember President Gerald Ford (you might not) as the 38th United States President that took over for President Nixon after he melted down.  President Ford was not know for his incredible intellect but he apparently had a quick, comical wit.

Now, I don’t have a issue with the fact that these statements have been made public.  Everybody seems interested in what former Presidents think and say (regardless of how pointless, meaningless, and inaccurate it is).  I guess that I don’t have a big problem with who made the comments, though I would think a person at the level of the Unites States President would be above that.  I don’t even have any reservations with who the potshots were taken at.  President Ford was apparently non-partisan, slamming Democrats and Republicans.  My biggest issue is that the comments were made post-mortem.  If you are going to make comments like these and make them public, you should have the courtesy to be alive to defend them.

In general, I just have a problem with publicly stated post-mortem non-partisan Presidential political potshots.
